How Long Is an Infant Car Seat Good For?

When it comes to your baby’s safety, few things are as essential as choosing and using the right car seat. Infant car seats are specifically designed to protect newborns and young babies on the road, but they don’t last forever. Understanding how long an infant car seat is good for is key to keeping your little one safe.

1. Weight and Height Limits

Every infant car seat has specific weight and height limits set by the manufacturer. Typically, infant seats are designed for babies up to 30–35 pounds and around 30–35 inches in height. If your baby exceeds either of these limits—even if just one—it’s time to transition to a larger, rear-facing convertible car seat.

2. Outgrowing the Fit

Aside from weight and height, check how your baby fits in the seat:

  • Are their shoulders above the harness slots?

  • Is the top of their head within 1 inch of the seat shell?
If the fit is no longer secure, it’s time to move up.

3. Expiration Date

Yes, car seats expire. Most infant car seats are good for 6–10 years from the date of manufacture (check the label on the bottom or back of your seat). Plastic and safety components can weaken over time, meaning an expired seat may not provide the same protection in an accident.

4. After an Accident or Recall

If your car seat has been in a moderate or severe accident, it may no longer be safe—even if it looks undamaged. Always check for manufacturer recalls to ensure your seat is compliant with current safety standards.

5. When to Transition

Many parents transition their baby to a convertible car seat around 9–18 months, depending on growth. These seats allow extended rear-facing use, which is the safest position for young children.

One Kid Safety Tip

Whenever you change car seats or adjust fit, always make sure your child’s outerwear is car seat safe. Bulky coats can interfere with harness safety. That’s why The Road Coat® was designed—to keep your baby warm and safely harnessed in their seat without compromising safety.
