Why The Road Coat?

The dangers of puffy winter coats

Parental Warning

As parents, car seat safety is always a top priority. While we diligently research the best seat for our child, we often overlook the risks associated with traditional winter coats. These bulky coats can create slack under car seat harnesses, putting children at risk of serious injuries, such as brain, neck, and spine damage, in the event of a crash.

The Road Coat goes on at home, stays on safely in the car seat without any harness adjustments, and transitions easily and quickly to the outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Road Coat is independently crash tested and endorsed by Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). With its worldwide patented design, it allows the harness to sit snugly against your child, ensuring maximum safety in the car seat—unlike bulky winter coats. The Road Coat is also endorsed by pediatricians and has received multiple parent-voted awards, giving families added confidence.

For the best fit, refer to our size chart. The Road Coat is available in sizes 6 Months to 10 Years, while The Road Coat® Snowsuit is available from 0/3 Months to 18/24 Months.

Kids lose body heat faster than adults—temperature ratings help parents know a coat will keep their child safely warm in real winter conditions. The Road Coat is independently tested for extreme cold, giving you peace of mind that your child is protected outdoors.

Since the creation of One Kid Outerwear in 1999, we’ve made significant efforts to reduce the use of PFCs in our products. While companies like Patagonia have shifted from C-8 to C-6 fluorocarbon-based DWR treatments, C-6—though less harmful—still poses risks.

With our 2022 Road Coat collections, we introduced a fluorine-free C-0 DWR finish. Although C-0’s water repellency is slightly less effective compared to C-6, it’s fully suitable for the car seat-safe Road Coat, ensuring we prioritize safety in every aspect of our designs.

Additionally, the Road Coat Arctic achieves water repellency through a combination of Arctic polyester fabric laminated with a micro-polyester membrane, taped seams, and taped zippers, resulting in a 100% waterproof rating.

THE ROAD COAT is engineered so the 5-point harness can pass to the front, which cannot be achieved safely with a regular coat.

If your child is old enough to be in a booster seat you can use The Road Coat in bigger size (7, 8 & 10). The child can sit on either side of the car.

THE ROAD COAT features a thin front inner layer that eliminates the puffy outer layer from being between the car seat harness and your child. This enable the harness to lay flat and snug against the chest, as recommended by car safety authorities. A unique split collar construction allows the harness straps to pass to the front & lay flat on the shoulders, providing comfort and safer travel for children in car seat or booster seat.

The back of THE ROAD COAT is constructed to be puffy, yet highly compressible. This leaves no excess fabric to create slack in the harness, keeping your child safer.

If your child is in an accident it is advised to remove the car seat with them in it until first responders get there to check them out for injuries. Removing the child with the coat on should not be any faster or slower than with any other article of clothing. (the outer zipper closure is optional while in car seat)

Yes, it may be possible to receive reimbursement from Medicaid for The Road Coat. Medicaid programs in some states may consider The Road Coat a medical necessity for children who need a car seat-safe winter coat.
